kisha’s kids is a labor of love that has been years in the making. I spent many years toying with the idea of creating an outlet where moms like me could find décor and accessories that kids could identify with. Two boys, one girl, four months pregnant, and thousands of prayers later, I made up my mind and kisha’s kids was born.
For years I’d become increasingly frustrated with not being able to find room décor for my children’s rooms, that would also be reflective of them. I would see the cutest picture frame with a ballerina on pointe and eagerly search for the “black version”, but I would never find her. Store clerks became puzzled when I asked for a brown-skinned child on a picture frame. After many apologies they could only offer me the standard rehearsed line; “We’ll look into it.”
I began my own search. Days turned to nights turned to weeks turned into a fruitless search for something which, quite frankly did not exist.
Even with a Masters degree in Education and Reading Specialist certification, going back to the classroom was not in my future. But one question still haunted me; “What am I going to do when the kids are gone?” Like many moms, the future of my children is my top priority. I want them to be filled with big dreams and happily-ever-afters. I had no time to think about anything else. God answered my prayers and brought an old idea back to mind. I would start a company that could fill a void in the home décor industry and the African-American market. Enter kisha’s kids.
Everything I sell is personal to me; it’s about my family, but it is also about your family and your need to teach your kids to be proud and find beauty in what makes us different. I hope that everyone, regardless of race or color, can shop kisha’s kids for high-end home décor and accessories for babies, children and moms. Every piece will not have a child’s image, but if there does happen to be an image of someone, he or she will have brown skin. Next spring our merchandise will expand to include other races and ethnicities. Among others, we plan on creating quality décor products for Hispanic, Native American and Asian children.
